This is Who We Are: Kevin and Jo Haecker
October 15th, 2014 | John Chandler
This is Who We Are is an interview series where the women and men of Austin Mustard Seed introduce themselves. If you’d like to participate, send an email to Chris Morton.
This week’s Who We Are features the Haeckers. That’s them above in front of a glacier, presumably while on one of their adventures and not in Austin.
Where is the most exciting place you have traveled?
Milford Sound in New Zealand. In 2013 we spent a week driving around the South Island of New Zealand, camping out and doing things like ice climbing, hiking, and sea kayaking. Our favorite place was Milford Sound in the Fiordlands.
What hobbies do you have?
Jo: Anything outdoors! Hiking, trail running, rock climbing, yoga. I also love painting, knitting, reading, binge-watching Gilmore Girls…..
Kevin: Rock Climbing, trail running, mountain biking, cooking, and running amok with our dog.
What is the most influential book you have ever read?
Jo: “A Severe Mercy” by Sheldon Vanauken
Where did you grow up?
Jo: Nashville, TN
Kevin: Austin
Where did you go to school?
Baylor University. Sic ‘Em Bears!
Why do you follow Jesus?
Because we see Him as our one and true Lord, and we believe real life is only found through him.
What is your favorite story or verse in scripture?
Jo: I find a lot of strength and comfort in Psalm 34. “The Lord is near to the broken hearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”
Kevin: Daniel and the lions’ den. I find it interesting that the king who sentenced Daniel to death (via lions) did so reluctantly, in a similar way to how Pilate felt in sentencing Jesus.
What is one thing you love about Austin Mustard Seed?
We love the emphasis that church is not just a Sunday morning gathering, but is expressed in relationships throughout the week. Also, the coffee is great!
