Community

April Karli continues our discussion on our Guiding Values with a sermon on Community.

At Austin Mustard Seed we believe that  Our connection to one another comes from our identity as members of God’s family. We come together around our common mission to partner with God in the making of all things new. We find joy in our differences, celebrate unity without demanding uniformity, and we learn to trust God and each other in new ways.

“Those who love their dream of a Christian community more than they love the Christian community itself become destroyers of that Christian community even though their personal intentions may be ever so honest, earnest and sacrificial…Those who dream of this idolized community demand that it be fulfilled by God, by others and by themselves. They enter the community of Christians with their demands set up by their own law, and judge one another and God accordingly….. Live together in the forgiveness of your sins. Forgive each other every day from the bottom of your hearts.”

Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Life Together

“Christian friendships are call-and-response friendships. We tell each other over and over, back and forth, the truth of who we are and who God is. Over dinner and on walks, dropping off soup when someone is sick, and in prayer over the phone, we speak the good news to each other. And we become good news to every other.”
